Ask the whole class. See every answer. Reteach tomorrow.
Live Check runs an assessment on your students' own devices during a lesson. It is part of EdSmartly Assessments, and it is not a separate exam platform.
A student opens the address on the board, types a six-character code and a first name, answers, and sends. You watch the answers arrive, close the check, and see the results by objective.
What the student sees
A student needs no account and installs nothing. The join screen asks for the code and a first name, and the questions follow. The student sends once. The screen confirms that the answers are in, and it never shows a score: the class goes through the check together, and others may still be answering.

What the teacher sees
Open the check from Assessment Studio and show the code on the board. The teacher's screen shows who has joined and who has sent, how the class is doing on each question as answers arrive, and one button to close the check. Multiple-choice, true or false, and fill-in answers are marked on arrival. Written answers are stored unmarked until you close, then marked against the mark scheme. You can change any mark.
- Question 1, multiple choice12 of 15 right
- Question 2, multiple choice8 of 15 right
- Question 3, short answermarked when you close
After you close: results by objective
Closing the check marks the written answers and files the check under Results exactly like a class you recorded by hand. Each objective is marked Secure (70% of the marks or more), Developing, or Gap (under 40%), with the misconceptions behind the most common wrong answers. Plan a reteach lesson opens the copilot with a lesson draft built around the objectives the class did not secure, which you approve like any other draft.
| Objective | Class mark | Band |
|---|---|---|
| Describe the particle model | 78% | Secure |
| Explain diffusion | 52% | Developing |
| Predict the effect of temperature | 31% | Gap |
Illustrative figures for three objectives, not a real class.
The privacy commitments, in plain words
These are the commitments in our privacy notice, applied to Live Check:
- Students reach a check through their school, and only while a teacher has it open. The school remains the data controller; we act as its processor on its documented instructions.
- We collect a first name, the answers and the marks. There is no student account, no email address, no surname and no device identifier.
- Student answers are never used to train AI models.
- First names are erased 30 days after a check closes. The answers and marks stay, recorded against a seat number.
- Nothing is timed or proctored, and a student is never shown a score on screen.
- When a teacher closes a check, written answers are marked by Anthropic or OpenAI only, identified by seat number and never by name. The marking does not fall back to another provider.
- A check left open closes automatically after 24 hours.
The limits
- Formative and untimed. It is not an exam platform: there is no timer and no proctoring.
- Up to 200 students in one check.
- A first name only. The join field accepts at most two words and 30 characters, and the name is erased 30 days after the check closes.
- Marks by seat number. A seat is assigned as each student joins, and the answers and marks stay with the seat.
- Written answers are marked by AI. Anthropic or OpenAI only, with names masked first and answers keyed by seat. A mark the model cannot return stays unmarked for the teacher, who can mark it.
- Approval where your school requires it. If approval is switched on, the assessment must be approved before a check can open.
- Both features switched on. The school needs Assessment and Student Practice enabled; switching off Student Practice switches Live Check off.
Try it, or see it with your class
Teachers can try EdSmartly free for 15 days. A head of school or a department can book a walkthrough and see a check run end to end, on a demo workspace with test data only.
